If the problem with Headway, the book summary app, is book summaries themselves, try edgi (free), Kinnu or Imprint. If Headway feels too shallow, try Shortform; if its library feels too small, Blinkist; if it costs too much, StoryShots or a free library card with Libby. We make edgi, which is why it's first.

Before you switch

Headway has more than self-help (Sapiens and A Brief History of Time are in there), plus streaks and spaced-repetition flashcards. If the only complaint is the bill, its free plan is one summary a day, and edgi is free outright.

Nearly every other "Headway alternatives" page lists only book-summary apps, and most are published by one of those apps. Shortform's list puts Shortform first. BeFreed's puts BeFreed first. Ours puts edgi first, which is why we told you up top.

Tired of book summaries: edgi, Kinnu or Imprint

A summary is still organized around someone else's book, and the idea you wanted may be one chapter of it.

edgi drops the book entirely. Each idea gets a 60-second Lesson, and finishing it puts the idea on your Map as a card, next to what it connects to, so the next thing you learn is whatever the last one made you curious about. It's free. There are more than 104,000 ideas, and we checked 13 of Headway's own topic pages (sleep, habits, mindfulness among them) against edgi's catalog. All 13 are edgi ideas with a Lesson.

Kinnu teaches subjects instead of books, and its general-knowledge app is free. It has 100 pathways and 899 public lessons, which run 321 to 3,842 words with a median of about 1,500. Its reviews happen in the app. Its homepage now leads with exam prep, but the general-knowledge pathways are still free.

Imprint turns ideas from psychology, philosophy, money and history into illustrated lessons of 2 to 10 minutes, across 165 courses. It's built around the drawings, and it costs about what Headway does: $74.99 to $99.99 a year on the App Store.

Headway's numbers depend on the page

If you're leaving because the library feels small, it helps to know how big it is, and nobody can tell you. Headway's homepage and pricing article say 2,500+ summaries. Its App Store description and homepage FAQ say 1,700+. Its library page says 1,600+. Its public sitemap lists 897 book-summary pages. Other sites say 1,800 or "over a thousand." A sitemap can leave pages out, so 897 is a floor, but three different figures on Headway's own pages can't all be right.

The price moves too. As of September 30, 2026, Headway's new price page lists 4-, 12- and 24-week plans at $19.99, $39.99 and $59.99, each renewing at double, while its features page still lists $12.99 a month, $29.99 every 3 months or $89.99 a year. The App Store lists at least nine Headway Premium prices between $12.99 and $89.99. On Trustpilot, makeheadway.com has 3.9 out of 5 from 6,636 reviews, 22% of them one-star, and a complaint reviewers repeat is being charged after cancelling. If billing is why you're leaving, check the renewal date on whatever you pick next.

Too shallow: Shortform

Shortform is the opposite trade to Headway: longer and pricier. Its guides come with tabs for Summary, Commentary, Exercise and Community (the preview on its homepage shows one for Atomic Habits), and its pricing page claims "10,000+ Books Covered." It costs $24 a month, or $16.42 a month billed as one yearly payment of about $197, roughly twice the $89.99 a year on Headway's features page. The App Store lists $23.99 and $194.99. If a 15-minute summary left you feeling you'd read the back cover, this is the fix.

Too small: Blinkist

Blinkist is the same format as Headway, with more of it. Its App Store copy says 9,000+ summaries and 42 million people, and it has 4.77 stars from 156,120 ratings. Its prices vary by tier: the App Store lists Premium annual plans from $79.99 to $119.99 and monthly ones from $12.99 to $15.99. A Pro tier is $139.99. Its website blocked our requests, so all of that is from the App Store listing. Gemini quoted Blinkist at 6,500 to 7,000 titles when we asked twice in September; its own listing has moved past that.

Too expensive: StoryShots, or a library card

StoryShots is the cheapest paid summary app on this list: $24.99 a year, $5.99 a month, or $39.99 once. It gives free summaries of "400+ bestsellers," and its App Store copy says it covers "1 million other bestsellers." One practical note: storyshots.com is a domain for sale; the app's site is getstoryshots.com.

The free option nobody lists, because nobody earns from it, is your library. Libby lends you your library's ebooks and audiobooks for free with a library card, and it has 4.85 stars from about 4.5 million ratings. It's the whole book, not a summary, so it doesn't fix the time problem. It fixes the price one completely.

Left off this list

Nibble shows up in these lists, and its own Headway alternatives article ranks Nibble fourth. We left it off because Nibble's own llms.txt says it's "Built by Headway Inc." That article doesn't say so.

Instaread's iPhone app hasn't been updated since June 2025. getAbstract leans toward business books and adds some articles and talks. Bookey, Sumizeit and BeFreed are more summary apps in the same mold as Headway.

FAQ

Is this the Headway book app or the therapy one? The book summary app, from makeheadway.com. The therapy platform is headway.co, and its iPhone app, "Headway Therapy & Psychiatry," launched on September 23, 2026. The book app's own llms.txt says "Headway is not a therapy platform."

Is there a free alternative to Headway? edgi is free, with 60-second Lessons on the ideas themselves instead of the books. Libby, with a library card, gets you whole books free. Kinnu's general-knowledge app is free. StoryShots has free summaries of 400+ bestsellers.

Is Headway worth it? If you have a list of nonfiction bestsellers and want each one's argument in 15 minutes, that's what it's built for. Its free summary a day is worth taking either way. Check which price you're offered, because it varies.

What's the difference between Headway and Shortform? Shortform's guides are longer and come with commentary and exercises. They cost about $197 a year billed yearly, against the $89.99 a year on Headway's features page. Headway is faster and cheaper; Shortform goes deeper.

Who owns Nibble? Nibble's own llms.txt says it's built by Headway Inc., the company behind Headway. Its App Store seller is Kremital Limited, and Headway's is GTHW App Limited.
