Apps that make you smarter, and the one we'd open first

By the edgi team

The app that makes you smarter is edgi. It's free, each 60-second Lesson leaves you understanding one new idea well enough to use it, and every idea becomes a card on a Map of what you know, so you can watch your knowledge grow. For math, Brilliant; for a course, Kinnu; for school subjects, Khan Academy; for brain games, Elevate.

We make edgi, and we built it so a minute on your phone leaves you knowing something you didn't.

What makes you smarter: understanding things

Smarter usually means one of two things. You know more, or you're quicker at the puzzle in front of you. Brain-training apps sell the second. We think the first is the one people notice: you understand why red wine dries your mouth, or how your immune system remembers a virus. You can explain it at dinner. That's what edgi is for.

A Lesson takes about 60 seconds. You play it instead of reading it, and it ends with a question or two that make you use the idea, so you find out on the spot whether you got it. Then the idea becomes a card in your collection and lights up on your Map, next to the ideas it connects to. The Map holds more than 104,000 ideas joined by 296,000 connections, and the next Lesson is whatever you just started wondering about. Cards turn foil, then gold, as you learn more around them.

This one is about the hardest part of getting smarter, which is knowing what you don't know:

60-second Lesson

Dunning-Kruger Effect

Checking your work takes the same skill as doing it, so the people who do worst are the least able to tell.

On the Map, the Dunning-Kruger effect connects to metacognition and to impostor syndrome, the same problem from the other side. Each is one more card. There's a streak to keep and a feed of short videos from educational creators.

The others, by what you want

Brilliant is the pick for math and code. Its problems are interactive, and its free plan allows two lessons a day, taken in course order.

Kinnu is a free course in general knowledge: 100 pathways of written lessons, plus a feature it calls Memory Shield, "a new method to never forget what you've learned."

Khan Academy is free and run by a nonprofit, with exercises and videos from math to history. It's the place to fill in what school skipped.

Elevate is brain training: 40+ games for skills like focus and processing speed, in a daily workout of 3 to 5 games. It's sold by subscription.
