The best app to learn geography, for the why of places

By the edgi team

edgi is the best app to learn geography if you want to know why places are the way they are. It has more than 3,900 free geography Lessons of about 60 seconds each, from the sea that dried up to the patch of desert no country wants, and every one becomes a card on a Map of what you know. For memorizing capitals and flags, Seterra is the classic; GeoGuessr makes a game of guessing where you are.

We make edgi, and we built it to be the most fun way to learn geography, the part that comes after the map.

Why edgi is the best way to learn geography

The Aral Sea sits between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. That's a quiz answer. It was once one of the largest lakes in the world, and it mostly vanished after the Soviet Union diverted the two rivers that fed it to grow cotton. That's geography, and on edgi it's a Lesson of about a minute.

Some of these are hard to stop telling people about. Bir Tawil is a patch of desert between Egypt and Sudan that neither country claims, because accepting the border that hands it over would mean giving up a bigger patch next door. Big Diomede is Russian. Little Diomede is American, about 2.4 miles away, and the International Date Line runs between them, so they're nearly a day apart on the calendar.

Others explain what you see out a window. A rain shadow is why one side of a mountain range is green and the other is dry. The coastline paradox is why nobody can say how long Britain's coast is: the shorter your ruler, the longer it gets.

Geography reaches your glass, too. Winemakers call it terroir, and it plays right here:

60-second Lesson

Terroir

A place changes its wine through its weather and its water, not through rock you can taste.

Finish it and terroir is your card. It lights up on your Map beside soil science and Napa Valley. Each of those is another Lesson and another card, and a streak counts the days you keep going.

Geography ideas on edgi's Map lead most often into history, then earth science. The Aral Sea is one step from the Soviet Union. Bir Tawil is one step from terra nullius, the old legal idea of land that belongs to no one.

Other geography apps

Seterra is the map quiz people grew up on. Its App Store listing promises "300+ different games," and its sessions are timed and graded. One line reads "Learn to distinguish Tasmania from Tanzania." The full version is free "with no ads or in-app purchases," and it's made by GeoGuessr AB.

GeoGuessr drops you into a real-world location and asks you to work out where you are. The download is free. Its listing says "a subscription is required for full access," with plans on the App Store from $3.49 to $71.99.

Google Earth is free satellite imagery and 3D terrain, with 3D buildings in hundreds of cities.
