Fun learning apps for adults, starting with the one that's free
The most fun learning app for adults is edgi. It's free, a Lesson takes 60 seconds and teaches whatever you're curious about, and every idea you finish becomes a card you collect on a Map of what you know. For a language, Duolingo; for trivia, Sporcle; for brain games, Elevate; for math, Brilliant.
We make edgi, and we built it to be the most fun way to learn something as a grown-up.

What makes learning fun for an adult
You're interested. That's most of it. School was fun when the topic grabbed you and a chore when it didn't, and nothing about that changes at 35. Most learning apps for adults copy the school version: pick a course, follow the syllabus, feel bad when you fall behind.
edgi starts at the other end, with something you already want to know. A Lesson takes about a minute, you play it instead of reading it, and it ends with a question or two that make you use the idea. Then the idea is yours: a card in your collection, lit up on a Map of more than 104,000 ideas, next to everything it connects to. The next Lesson is whichever of those you just started wondering about. Cards go from matte to foil to gold as you learn more around them.
Here's one to try. It's about the psychic trick that works on almost everyone:
60-second Lesson
Cold reading
A reader who seems to know you is mostly saying what fits anyone, and letting you fill in the rest.
On edgi's Map, cold reading connects to the Barnum effect and to mentalism. Pick one and keep going. When you'd rather lean back, there's a feed of short videos from educational creators. And if your phone time is the problem, edgi on iPhone can lock TikTok or Instagram until you've done a Lesson.
The other fun ones, by what you want
Duolingo is the best-known game in the category: bite-sized lessons in 40+ languages, and now chess, math and music courses too. It's free, and Super Duolingo is sold in the app.
Sporcle is for adults who like being tested. Its listing counts "more than two million quizzes," from geography to movies, plus daily games like Acrostic. It's free with ads, and an Orange membership removes them.
Elevate turns everyday skills like reading and mental math into short games, with a personalized daily workout of 3 to 5 of them. It's sold by subscription.
Brilliant makes math and coding interactive. The free plan is two lessons a day, in course order.
For more on gamified learning beyond languages, see Duolingo for general knowledge.
Pick something else only if…
