How to get your attention span back

By the edgi team

To get your attention span back, train it on things you're actually curious about, and stretch it a little at a time: one minute, then ten, then half an hour, then a chapter. Meanwhile, cut the interruptions that keep resetting it. edgi, a free iPhone app, is built for the first rungs: 60-second Lessons on anything, Explainers you listen to for a few minutes straight, Sets of six to nine that you finish in one sitting, and a lock that keeps TikTok shut until you've done a Lesson.

We make edgi, and we built it on the idea that curiosity is the best attention trainer there is.

First, your attention span isn't 8 seconds

You've heard that people now have an eight-second attention span, shorter than a goldfish. That number came from a 2015 Microsoft Canada report, which credited a website called Statistic Brain. When the BBC's statistics show More or Less followed the trail in 2017, it found no research behind the figure. Psychologists don't measure "average attention span" as one number at all, because it depends on the task.

Attention Span

Attention span isn't one number. A dull watch wears it down in half an hour, and the famous 8 seconds was never measured.

That's good news. Attention isn't a fixed tank that TikTok drained. It depends on what you're paying attention to, and how tired, hungry or interrupted you are. Enjoyable, intrinsically interesting tasks hold it longer. So the way back is to practice sustained attention on things that make sustaining it easy.

The attention ladder

Think of it as a ladder. Start on the rung you can stand on today and climb one a week.

Rung How long What to do In edgi
1 1 minute One complete idea, start to finish, with a question at the end A 60-second Lesson: you guess, tap and test one idea to the end
2 A few minutes Listen to one thing all the way through An Explainer, screen off
3 10 minutes A short run of related ideas, without switching apps Finish a Set of six to nine cards
4 20 to 30 minutes A long article or a chapter, phone in another room Make a Lesson or a quiz on what you read, to check it stuck
5 An hour A book, a documentary, deep work Your Map shows what you've covered

The important part is finishing. A feed trains the opposite habit: start, skip, start, skip. Every rung on the ladder ends, and you get to the end.

Cut what resets it

  1. Turn off notifications for everything that isn't a person. Each buzz restarts the clock.
  2. One thing at a time. If you're watching, don't scroll; if you're reading, don't text.
  3. Lock the feeds. In edgi, open Settings, then Focus, pick TikTok, Instagram or YouTube, and choose how many times a day each opens and for how long. The first open of the day, or every open, costs a 60-second Lesson, so even the reflex reach becomes rung one.
  4. Take real breaks. A walk beats a scroll.

Start with what you're curious about

The fastest way to stretch attention is to point it at something you want to know. That's what edgi is for: more than 44,000 Lessons across 105,000 ideas, so there's a first rung for whatever pulls you in, whether that's black holes, Roman emperors or why spicy isn't a taste. Finish one and edgi offers the ideas it connects to, so curiosity carries you up the ladder without you noticing.

There's even a Set on this exact subject: The Flow State, seven cards on attention span, flow, mind wandering, the cocktail party effect and how executive function works. The line on flow says it best: it comes when a task is just hard enough for you.

Keep climbing every day

Attention comes back with practice, and practice needs a habit. One Lesson keeps your edgi streak, and a widget on your home screen keeps it in sight. Every Lesson earns a card, cards turn foil and then gold as you come back to the idea, and your Map fills in so you can see the practice adding up.

FAQ

How do I get my attention span back? Practice sustained attention on things you're curious about, and lengthen it gradually: a 60-second Lesson, an Explainer, a ten-minute Set, a chapter. Cut notifications and lock the feeds that interrupt you. edgi does the first rungs, free.

Is the human attention span really 8 seconds? No. The figure traces to a 2015 Microsoft Canada report that credited a website with no research behind it, and psychologists don't measure attention span as one number.

How long does it take to get your attention span back? It depends on the person. Climbing one rung a week, from one minute toward an hour, is a good pace.

Is edgi free? Yes. edgi is free on iPhone, Focus included.
