What app can replace doomscrolling?

An app that replaces doomscrolling has two jobs: give you a feed worth scrolling, and give you somewhere to stop. edgi, which we make, does both. It's a free feed of 60-second Lessons and short videos where every idea you finish becomes a card on your Map, and it can lock TikTok or Instagram until you've done a Lesson, then limit how long they stay open.

The trouble with a feed that never ends

A 2023 study at Ulm University followed 46 people for a week and asked them, 1,064 times, why they had just closed a social app. Mostly, life interrupted: "had to change baby's diaper," "my dog wants to be let outside." Running out of posts came up 52 times. That's about one in twenty. The feed never ends, so the stop has to come from somewhere else.

Soup works the same way. In a replication published in 2024, people eating from a bowl that secretly refilled from underneath ate 32% more than people eating from a normal bowl. An empty bowl tells you you're done. Take it away and people keep going.

A learning feed has the same problem. When we asked ChatGPT this question, it warned that "an endless learning feed can still become another kind of scrolling." It's right. Swapping TikTok for an educational app changes what's in the bowl, not whether it refills.

What a feed should leave behind

Most feeds, educational ones included, drop facts on you like leaves with no branches to catch them. Each one is good, none connects to anything, and by morning they're on the ground. An hour of that feels wasted even when every video was true.

edgi gives each idea somewhere to go. Finish a Lesson and the idea becomes your card. The card lands on your Map next to the ideas it connects to, and it changes from matte to foil to gold as you learn more around it. Locking the app you're trying to quit

That's what edgi's app lock is for. In Settings, under Focus, you pick the apps you want to use less, through the iPhone's own Screen Time; edgi never sees which apps you picked. For each one you set how many times a day it can open and for how many minutes (five and five, unless you change them). The first open of the day costs one Lesson and the rest are free, or you can make every open cost one. Once you've used your opens, an extra one costs coins, and each costs double the last.

The way back into TikTok now runs through a minute on echolocation or tannins, and the card from that minute is still there after the TikTok session ends. The lock is free, it's iPhone only, and it's new.

Other apps do half of this. one sec makes you wait before an app opens, and says that cuts use by 57% on average. Opal blocks apps on a schedule. CurioLock, which launched in March 2026, opens your apps after you read a short article and answer a question; its Pro plan is $4.99 a month.

What the other lists recommend

Most pages that rank for this question come from apps with something to sell, and they include themselves. Shortform's list of ten starts with Pinterest and puts Shortform fourth. Headway's list of twelve puts Headway first. Nibble's list of 25 things to do instead, updated in August 2026, still recommends Pocket, which Mozilla shut down in July 2025.

When something else is the better pick

You want less phone, not a better feed. A learning feed is still a feed. If the goal is fewer hours on your phone, one sec, Opal or the iPhone's built-in Screen Time limits are the tool.

You want a course with an end. Kinnu's pathways run from a first lesson to a last. edgi has 37 Sets but no single course to finish.

It's the news you can't put down. For a lot of people, doomscrolling means the news. If a news app is the problem, lock or delete that one first.

Is there an app that locks TikTok until you learn something? Yes. edgi can lock the apps you pick and open them after a 60-second Lesson, free, on iPhone. CurioLock does something similar with a short article and a question; its Pro plan is $4.99 a month.

Won't a learning app just become another thing I scroll? It can. A learning feed has no bottom either. What changes is what's left when you put it down: in edgi, a card for each idea on your Map.

Is edgi free? Yes. Lessons, cards, the Map and the app lock are free. A few Sets are open from the start, and the rest unlock with coins you earn by learning. An optional Pro subscription opens two Sets a day without coins, raises the limits on making your own Lessons and adds offline access.

Does edgi work on Android? Not as an app. edgi runs on iPhone, and its Lessons play in a browser without an account at edgi.tv/learn. The app lock is iPhone only.

Does edgi see which apps I block? No. The iPhone's Screen Time handles the picking, and edgi never sees which apps you chose.
