Something to do on your phone before bed besides scrolling

By the edgi team

Open edgi. It's a free iPhone app where everything has an end: a Lesson is 60 seconds of guessing, tapping and testing one idea, and it finishes with a question, a Set is six to nine of them, and an Explainer is a few minutes of audio that keeps playing with the screen off. Every idea becomes a card on a Map of what you know, so the last ten minutes of your day leave you with something.

We make edgi, and we built it so the last thing you do on your phone tonight is something you're glad you did.

Scrolling in bed has no bottom

A feed loads the next video before this one ends, so nothing ever tells you it's time to stop, and "five more minutes" lands at 1 a.m. Every article on this tells you to put the phone in another room. If you were going to do that, you wouldn't be reading this.

What works is something that ends by itself:

You have Do this in edgi It ends when
A minute One Lesson You answer its question
Ten minutes One Set, start to finish You've collected every card in it
Lights off One Explainer, screen off The audio does

Tonight's Set: what sleep is actually for

edgi has a Set about the thing you're putting off. What Sleep Is Actually For is open from your first day, and it's eight cards: sleep debt, chronotypes, the circadian rhythm, REM sleep, slow-wave sleep, melatonin, insomnia, and the therapy that treats insomnia without pills. Its line: "You know you slept badly. You are the last to notice what it cost."

Eight Lessons, about eight minutes, and then the Set is done and there's nothing left to load. Start with dreams:

60-second Lesson

Dreams

You dream about two hours a night and forget almost all of it, yet a lucid dreamer once answered a math problem from inside a dream.

Make it the last thing you do

Your streak in edgi counts days, and one Lesson keeps it. That makes a Lesson in bed the easiest habit you'll ever build: one minute, one card, streak safe, phone down. A month of it puts thirty-odd ideas on your Map, which is thirty more than a month of late-night Reels left you.

If you'd rather not look at the screen at all, open an Explainer. Explainers run a few minutes, they keep playing with the phone locked, and you can make one on whatever you're wondering about as you drift off: the Roman Empire, octopuses, why cats knead.

And if the problem is TikTok at midnight, lock it. In edgi's Focus settings, pick TikTok, choose how many opens it gets a day, and it stays shut until you've done a Lesson. Loosening the limit only takes effect at midnight, so a late-night change of heart waits until tomorrow.

FAQ

What can I do on my phone before bed instead of scrolling? Open edgi and do something that ends: a 60-second Lesson, a Set of six to nine, or an Explainer you listen to with the screen off. Each idea becomes a card on your Map. It's free on iPhone.

Is there an app that stops me scrolling at night? edgi can lock the apps you scroll, like TikTok or Instagram, behind a 60-second Lesson, with the number of opens you choose. Set it in edgi's Focus settings.

Can I listen to edgi with my screen off? Yes. Explainers play as audio with the phone locked, like a podcast.

Is edgi free? Yes. edgi is free on iPhone, Focus included.
