Is there an educational alternative to YouTube Shorts?
Yes: edgi. It's a free iPhone app with a Shorts-style feed of videos from educational creators, and one sideways swipe away, 60-second Lessons that end in a question or two. Every idea you finish turns into a card on your Map, so what you learned is still there tomorrow, connected to the ideas around it.
We make edgi, and we built it to be the most fun way to learn from short videos.
| App | What you swipe through | Videos from | What it adds | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| edgi | Short videos, and 60-second Lessons that end in a question or two | Educational creators | A card for each idea, on a Map of 104,000 ideas | Free |
| Spirkz | "Shorts and reels made for education only," 60 seconds or less | "Teachers, professionals and passionate creators" | Topics in 12 areas | Free |
| Learna | "The best explainers on the internet, in one feed" | TED-Ed, Khan Academy, 3Blue1Brown and other creators | Quizzes, and a tutor that costs credits | Free feed; iPhone beta only |
| Revyze | Study videos and quizzes for "SAT · ACT · AP · YOUR CLASS" | Not stated in its listing | Grades 6 to 12, by class and test | Revyze Plus from $9.99 |
| TED app | Thousands of TED Talks | TED | A "Surprise Me!" button | Free |
| Nebula | Longer videos and originals, "unlimited and ad-free" | Independent creators | Bonus material and early releases | $6 a month or $60 a year for new subscribers |
From each app's US App Store listing or own site, checked October 2026. Nebula's price is from its last pricing post, August 2024.
YouTube already has the creators
The best explainers on the internet are on YouTube. Josh, who started edgi, learned from channels like Veritasium and Vsauce. As he wrote in 2023, "On YouTube I had autonomy over what I wanted to learn."
Shorts is where that autonomy goes. A Short can now run three minutes, and the same feed that serves you a great one on why the sky is blue serves a prank next, then a podcast clip, then a recipe. Nothing in the feed marks the explainer as the good part, and by the recipe it's gone.
edgi: the creators, without the rest
edgi's Videos feed is short videos from educational creators, and that's all it is. Swipe sideways and you're in Lessons: a minute on one idea that you play rather than watch, ending with a question that makes you use it. Finish one and the idea is yours as a card, pinned to the Map beside the ideas it touches.
Here's a Lesson that could be a Short. An ambulance's siren plays one steady note. You hear it drop as it passes, because the waves pile up in front of it and stretch out behind. It sounds as if the pitch should climb as it gets closer. It doesn't. Closer only means louder.
60-second Lesson
Doppler Effect
A moving siren's waves pile up in front and stretch out behind, so its pitch drops as it passes.
On Shorts, a cooking hack could be next. On edgi's Map, the Doppler effect's card connects to Redshift, the same stretch in starlight that showed the universe is expanding, and Doppler weather radar, which is how forecasters spot a tornado, connects to it. One siren, and you're a tap from cosmology.
The other ways to get educational Shorts
Spirkz is the closest thing to "Shorts, but only educational": a feed of videos of a minute or less, from teachers and creators, free. It reached the App Store in September 2026 and is very new.
Learna puts videos from TED-Ed, Khan Academy, 3Blue1Brown and other creators "in a feed you can actually finish," with quizzes, and credits every video to its creator. For now it's an iPhone beta you join through TestFlight, not an App Store app.
Revyze is built for school: short videos and quizzes for the SAT, ACT and AP exams and for grades 6 to 12.
The TED app is free and has thousands of talks, longer than a Short and shorter than a lecture. Nebula is a subscription for independent creators' longer videos and originals.
You can also fence Shorts in. In the YouTube app, tap You, then Settings, then Time management: there's a Shorts feed limit you can set as low as zero. When you hit it, YouTube shows a reminder, which you can dismiss.
For the TikTok side of the same question, see apps like TikTok but educational. For Reels, see an educational alternative to Instagram Reels.
Pick something else only if…
- You're studying for the SAT, ACT or an AP exam: Revyze.
- You want longer videos from independent creators: Nebula.
- You need Android. edgi runs on iPhone only, though its Lessons play in any browser at edgi.tv/learn.
