Is Kinnu free? Yes, with a few paid extras

By the edgi team

Yes, Kinnu is free: as of September 30, 2026, its General Knowledge app costs nothing to download and its pathways are free, and the App Store lists optional extras, certificates at $7.99 to $19.99 and a subscription called "Monthly" at $1.99. If you want a free app to learn something new every day, edgi is free too: a Lesson takes 60 seconds, every idea you finish becomes a card, and the cards build a Map of what you know.

We make edgi, and we built it for learning whatever you're curious about right now.

What costs money on Kinnu

Only the extras. Kinnu's homepage calls its library "a universe of free and fascinating pathways," and its App Store listing says the app "contains an optional in-app subscription." The in-app purchases it lists are three certificates ($7.99, $14.99 and $19.99) and the $1.99 Monthly item.

You can read Kinnu without the app, too. Its website publishes 899 lessons from those 100 pathways, free, under the name Kinnuverse. A Kinnu lesson is a chapter you read, one of several in a pathway. The biggest category on the site is science, with 31 pathways; history has 20 and psychology 11.

edgi: free, and you lead

edgi starts from the question you have now. A Lesson takes about a minute and ends with a question or two that make you use the idea. Finish it and the idea becomes your card, lit up on your Map next to everything it connects to. The next Lesson is whichever of those caught your attention. There's no pathway to finish, just more than 104,000 ideas joined by 296,000 connections, and 44,000 of those ideas have a Lesson.

Kinnu sells itself on remembering. Here's an edgi Lesson about which memories last:

60-second Lesson

Reminiscence bump

Ask a 70-year-old for their memories and they pile up between about 10 and 30, far more than fading predicts.

On the Map, the reminiscence bump connects to autobiographical memory and to aging, and it shares a Set with nostalgia, which started out as a diagnosis for homesick soldiers. Each card turns foil, then gold, as you learn more around it. Between Lessons there's a feed of short videos from educational creators, and on iPhone edgi can lock TikTok or Instagram until you've done a Lesson.

The two apps side by side are in edgi vs Kinnu, and the other options are in Kinnu alternatives.
