The app to learn how AI actually works
The app to learn how AI actually works is edgi. Its Set How ChatGPT Actually Works is eight 60-second Lessons, open from your first day: what an embedding is, what "attention" means inside a model, why transformers took over, and why a chatbot makes things up. No coding, no course, and it's free on iPhone. When a question comes up, make a Lesson on it.
We make edgi, and we built it so you can understand the thing everyone's talking about in less time than it takes to read the news about it.
A 60-second Lesson
The card you keep
Your Map of ideas
Eight ideas, eight minutes
Everything ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini do rests on a handful of ideas. edgi's Set puts them in order:
| Card | The idea in one line |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Under ChatGPT is a model that only continued text. People's ratings taught it to answer, and to agree with you. |
| Self-supervised learning | Hide part of the data and make a model guess it. The hidden part is the answer key, so nobody has to write one. |
| Embedding | An embedding turns a word into a spot on a map, where words with similar meanings sit close together. |
| Attention | When an AI reads a word, it picks which other words to look at to work out what it means. |
| Transformer | A transformer reads every word at once, then again and again in layers. That speed is why it took over. |
| GPT | A GPT writes by guessing one word, adding it, and guessing again. It can never take a word back. |
| Hallucination | A chatbot guesses the word that usually comes next, so for a fact it never read, it makes one up. |
| Scaling law | Ten times the computer power cuts an AI's error by about the same share each time, so labs can forecast a giant run before paying for it. |
Each line is its Lesson's. Each Lesson is a minute of playing with the idea, then a question, then the card is yours. Finish all eight and the next time someone at dinner says "it's just autocomplete," you'll know exactly how right and how wrong that is.
Start with the one that matters most when you use these tools:

Hallucination (artificial intelligence)

Then the big questions
The second Set, How Would We Know If AI Thinks?, is the philosophy: the Turing test, Searle's Chinese room, Moravec's paradox, AGI, machine consciousness, the singularity and alignment. Its line: "Philosophers wrote the tests for thinking machines decades before the machines existed. Now the machines pass."
They do. In a study published in March 2025, people chatted for five minutes with a human and a machine at the same time, then picked which one was human. GPT-4.5, told to play a humanlike persona, was picked as the human 73% of the time, more often than the actual humans.
Learning AI from an AI
The neat part of learning AI in edgi is that one is right there. Ask Nova, edgi's AI, what a token is, why models need so many chips, or what "reasoning" means in a model's name, and she answers. Then make a Lesson on it: it walks you through the idea, you test it as you go, and it ends with a card. Or make a quiz, or a longer Explainer to listen to. What you learn goes on your Map next to everything else, and AI connects to more than you'd think: linguistics, neuroscience, philosophy, economics.

Eight minutes beats a course you never finish
An AI course asks for a free weekend. Eight cards ask for eight minutes, and one Lesson a day keeps your streak alive while you get there. edgi is built for showing up: a streak and a home-screen widget, a card for every idea, a Set with a finish line, and a Map that shows how far you've come.

FAQ
What's the best app to learn how AI works? edgi. Its Set How ChatGPT Actually Works explains embeddings, attention, transformers and hallucination in eight 60-second Lessons, open from day one, and you can make a Lesson on any follow-up question.
Can I learn how AI works without coding? Yes. edgi's Lessons explain the ideas behind models like ChatGPT with no math or code.
How does ChatGPT actually work, in one sentence? It's a model trained to guess the next word, then taught by people's ratings to answer helpfully; everything else is how well it learned to guess.
Is edgi free? Yes. edgi is free: Lessons, cards, Sets and the Map.
