Headway app review (the book summary app)

Headway is for people who want the main argument of a nonfiction bestseller in about 15 minutes, read or heard, and most people who rate it are happy with that: as of September 30, 2026, 83% of its 117,124 App Store ratings are five stars. It's the wrong app if you want depth, a shelf strong in science or history (about 12% of its public summaries, by Headway's own labels), or one clear price, since Headway's own pages now list two different sets of plans.

This is Headway the book summary app, from makeheadway.com, not the therapy platform at headway.co. We make edgi, a different kind of learning app, so weigh this accordingly.

What we looked at, on September 30, 2026: five of Headway's public summary pages in full and the category label on all 897 in its sitemap, its US App Store listing and its 500 most recent written reviews through Apple's public feed, its website and new price page, and its Trustpilot page. We didn't pay for Headway, make an account, open the app or listen to its audio. Anything below about what happens inside the app is Headway's own description.

What you get

From Headway's website and App Store listing, as of September 30, 2026. The core is the summary: the homepage calls them "15-min summaries," to read or to hear, and the features page says "about 12-20 minutes." The time labels on the 897 summary pages in Headway's public sitemap run from 8 to 19 minutes, with a median of 14.

Around it, in Headway's words:

• A Shorts tab with "four visual, interactive formats that turn book insights into quick, scrollable lessons on real-life topics." The features page doesn't name the four.
• Audio where you can "Pick the narrator voice you prefer," an "Offline mode," CarPlay and Android Auto.
• A "Spaced Repetition feature" that, in the App Store listing's words, "helps turn your favorite insights into flashcards."
• "Daily streaks and progress tracking."
• "Self-growth challenges" on Success, Wealth, Healthy Relationships, Modern Parenting, Self-Confidence and Emotional Intelligence.

There are apps for iPhone and Android plus a web version, in 11 languages.

What Headway does well

Its ratings are strong. As of September 30, 2026, the App Store listing has 4.64 out of 5 from 117,124 ratings, and 60% of the 6,636 reviews on its Trustpilot page are five stars. In the 500 recent App Store reviews we read, the 323 five-star ones give two reasons above the rest: 58 use words like quick, short, brief or minutes, and 32 mention audio, listening or a voice. The best of them is honest about the trade:

"What would have normally taken months to finish one book, Headway summarizes in 12 minutes. The loss in depth is massively outweighed by the breadth of key ideas across many books." (App Store review, 5 stars, May 27, 2026, excerpt)

You can judge the writing before you pay. Each public summary page shows its first two key points in full, with no account. The free plan goes further, a whole summary a day: the features page promises "one book summary per day," in text and audio, with "No credit card required." The catch is in the FAQ, which calls it "one pre-selected book daily," so you don't pick the book.

The catalog reaches past self-help. Sapiens, A Brief History of Time, The Selfish Gene, Guns, Germs, and Steel, The Origin of Species and Silent Spring all have summary pages, and Headway files 45 pages under science and 61 under history.

And the app is kept up. The App Store shows 25 versions between May 25 and September 23, 2026. The release notes for the latest eight all mention new book summaries.

What the free pages show

All five public summary pages we read on September 30, 2026 stop at the same place: the first two key points in full, the rest as titles only, under the line "Full summary is waiting for you in the app."

That's enough to judge the style, not enough to learn much from.

What's in the library

Every summary page carries a category label that Headway assigns. We read it on all 897 pages in the public sitemap (September 30, 2026):

That puts 557 of the 897 (62%) in psychology and the social sciences, and 106 (about 12%) in science and history. The labels are loose (Educated and Man's Search for Meaning are filed under history), so read them as a rough map. The library page leans the same way: none of the 30 links in its "Popular Topics" block is history, science, nature, philosophy or biography. Cosmos, The Wealth of Nations and The Republic have no summary page.

How big is Headway's library?

Headway's own pages give three answers, as of September 30, 2026:

A sitemap can leave pages out, but this one looks close to complete: of the 795 published summaries linked from the 50 topic pages we read, 790 are in it. Those topic pages also list 433 books that have no summary; the 36 of them we requested all returned "not found." So 897 is the only count we could make, and the three figures on Headway's own pages can't all be right.

How much does Headway cost?

As of September 30, 2026, Headway's own pages give two different price lists. Its old pricing article now redirects to a new price page, published September 29, with three plans. None of them is monthly or yearly, and by that page's own numbers each intro price renews at double.

The new price page doesn't mention a free trial; the features page and FAQ still do. Headway's subscription terms (last updated September 2, 2026) also allow "commitment plans": if you cancel early, "you may be required to pay the remaining amounts due for that period, as disclosed to you at the time of purchase." Whatever offer you see, read the renewal line before you pay.

Billing complaints

We read the 500 most recent US App Store reviews with text (May 8 to September 27, 2026) and counted the words in them. That sample is not the whole picture. One-star ratings are 4.7% of the listing's 117,124 ratings but 25.6% of the recent written reviews, and the one-star share has been falling: 35 of 126 reviews in May, 38 of 106 in June, 20 of 97 in August and 8 of 57 in September.

What the two ends of the sample write about is very different. These are word matches, not a reading of every review, so treat them as rough:

The one-star stories are mostly about money: a trial that turned into a charge, or a charge after cancelling.

"I canceled my trial before the deadline and was charged anyway. Be sure you want it before trialing the app." (App Store review, 1 star, August 16, 2026)

Another reviewer couldn't find the subscription in Apple's list:

"The app doesn’t allow you to cancel the subscription. It doesn’t appear under the Apple subscriptions. To cancel you have to log in on the website." (App Store review, 1 star, September 11, 2026, excerpt)

Headway's FAQ says subscriptions bought on its website are cancelled from your account page, which fits a website purchase; we didn't test it. On the other side, 10 of the 12 five-star reviews that use a billing word thank Headway's support for help with a subscription.

Trustpilot shows the same split. As of September 30, 2026, makeheadway.com has 3.9 out of 5 from 6,636 reviews, 60% five-star and 22% one-star, and Trustpilot shows Headway replying to 99% of negative reviews. A recent one-star review:

"I registered for a month. Later I unsubscribed and deleted my account. It is still taking my money and now I can not even reach to my account." (Trustpilot review, 1 star, September 29, 2026)

Headway's FAQ doesn't dodge it: billing concerns "come up in reviews sometimes," it says, and it lays out the cancel steps below.

How to cancel Headway

From Headway's FAQ and features page, as of September 30, 2026. Cancel where you paid:

• iPhone: Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → Headway → Cancel.
• Android: Google Play Store → your profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Headway → Cancel.
• Bought on the website: turn off automatic renewal on your account page.

Do it at least 24 hours before the renewal date. Deleting the app does not cancel. Refunds for App Store and Google Play purchases go through Apple or Google; for website purchases, the FAQ says refunds are "at our discretion."

Where edgi fits

Take social proof. Headway's Influence page names it in its FAQ as one of Cialdini's six principles, but the two free key points never reach it; the matching section, "Striving to blend in with the crowd," is a title behind the gate. Its point: a crowd is good evidence only when each person chose on their own.

How do I cancel Headway? Cancel where you paid: your iPhone's Subscriptions settings, Google Play's Payments & subscriptions, or your Headway account page for website purchases. Deleting the app doesn't cancel, and Headway says to cancel at least 24 hours before renewal.

Is this the Headway therapy app? No. This review is about the book summary app from makeheadway.com. The therapy platform is headway.co, and its app is called "Headway Therapy & Psychiatry."

Is Headway good for science or history? It has some, including Sapiens and A Brief History of Time. But as of September 2026, only about 12% of its 897 public summary pages carry a science or history label, and books like Cosmos have no page.

Is edgi free? Yes. Lessons, cards and the Map are free. A few Sets are open from the start, and the rest unlock with coins you earn by learning. An optional Pro subscription opens two Sets a day without coins, raises the limits on making your own Lessons and adds offline access.
