How to stop opening apps without thinking

By the edgi team

To stop opening apps without thinking, put a question between your thumb and the app, one that a reflex can't answer. The simplest version is free: edgi's Focus lock shows "Open TikTok?" every time you tap a locked app and asks for a 60-second Lesson before it opens, on the number of opens and minutes you chose. The reflex still fires; it just lands on a decision instead of a feed.

We make edgi, and we built Focus for the opens you don't remember making.

Why your thumb gets there first

Opening an app you open fifty times a day isn't a choice anymore. It's a skill, and skills run by themselves:

60-second Lesson

Automaticity

Practice makes a skill run by itself. You cannot stop reading a word, even when told to ignore it.

You can't not read a word you see, and you can't easily not tap an icon you've tapped ten thousand times. The sequence is unlock, swipe, tap, and it completes before the thought "I didn't mean to do this" arrives. Willpower shows up too late, every time.

The good news is how many of those opens you don't actually want. In a 2023 study in PNAS, 280 people put a short pause in front of chosen apps for six weeks, and they closed the app instead of opening it 36% of the times the pause caught them. More than a third of the reaching ended the moment it had to be a choice.

1. Break the muscle memory

Your thumb knows where the icon is, so move it. Put the apps you open on autopilot off your first home screen, inside a folder, ideally on the last page. Put something you're glad to open in their old spots. It costs nothing, and your thumb has to think for a second before it finds the new route.

2. Remove the cues someone else chose

A red badge is a reason to open an app that the app picked for you. In Settings, then Notifications, turn off badges and alerts for everything that isn't a person talking to you. Fewer cues, fewer reflexes.

3. Put a question at the door

This is the step that lasts. In edgi, open Settings, then Focus, and pick the apps you open without meaning to through the iPhone's Screen Time picker. For each, edgi writes your intention as a sentence: "I'll open Instagram no more than 4 times a day, for 5 min each time." Choose the opens (1 to 30), the minutes (1 to 60) and the days.

Now the reflex lands here:

Open Instagram? One lesson opens Instagram for 5 minutes. 2/4 Opens Today

That screen is a question your thumb can't answer by itself. Close it, or tap "Do a Lesson" for a minute of something genuinely interesting. Either way, you decided.

4. Make the question worth answering

A question at the door works better when the answer gives you something. A Lesson is a different idea every time: one day why your brain runs a learned routine as a single chunk, the next why red wine dries your mouth, or why the Fed buys and sells bonds. You guess, tap and test your way through it, the card is yours, and Instagram opens for the minutes you set.

Choose Every open for the app you open most mindlessly, and Once a day for the others. Any Lesson you do in edgi pays the day for every once-a-day app, so a Lesson in the morning turns those into one-tap opens until midnight, within the count you set.

5. Keep tonight's you from undoing it

A stricter rule starts the moment you save it. A looser one waits: "A looser limit starts tomorrow." That's the last piece, because late at night is exactly when you'd talk yourself out of the plan.

What you end up with is a collection. Every Lesson is a card. Cards turn foil, then gold, as you return to an idea, and they light up a Map of everything you've learned. Your streak shows up on the block screen, and one Lesson a day keeps it. The Focus screen counts your blocked opens each day ("12 blocked opens today"), so you can watch the reflex.

Step 3 is an app intention, if you want the method in full. For the bigger habit, see how to break a phone habit.

FAQ

Why do I open apps without thinking? Opening an app you use dozens of times a day becomes automatic, like reading a word you see. The tap finishes before a decision can start.

How do I stop opening Instagram automatically? Move it off your home screen, turn off its badges, and put a question in front of it. edgi's free Focus lock shows "Open Instagram?" and opens it after a 60-second Lesson, for the opens and minutes you set.

Does a pause before opening apps work? Yes. In a 2023 PNAS study, people closed the app 36% of the times a pause caught them, and tried to open those apps 37% less by week six. edgi's pause is a 60-second Lesson, so it also leaves you a card.

Is edgi free? Yes. edgi is free on iPhone, Focus included.
