How to stop procrastinating on your phone while studying
To stop procrastinating on your phone while studying, deal with the feeling that sends you to it, then make the phone a worse escape and a better break. Procrastination is mostly running from a bad feeling (the hard problem set, the blank essay), and your phone is the fastest exit. edgi, a free iPhone app, turns that exit into a 60-second Lesson: TikTok and Instagram open only after one, for the opens and minutes you set, so even the escape is learning.
We make edgi, and we built Focus for the moment you open TikTok with a textbook in front of you.

Why you grab your phone when you should be studying
It isn't laziness. Psychologists who study procrastination describe it as short-term mood repair: you trade the task for relief now, and your future self pays. It's the feeling:
60-second Lesson
Procrastination
Putting a task off is mostly about escaping a bad feeling now, and your future self pays for it.
The chapter feels hard, or boring, or like proof you're behind. Your phone makes the feeling go away in under a second. The relief is the reward, so next time the chapter feels hard, your hand moves faster. That's the loop, and it's why "I'll just put my phone away" lasts about one study session.
edgi has a whole Set on this. Why You Procrastinate is open from your first day: seven cards, from perfectionism and analysis paralysis to the fear of being judged. It's a good first study break of the week.
1. Shrink the first step until it's boring
The bad feeling is about the whole task. Nobody dreads "write the first sentence" or "do problem 1." Start with a step so small it doesn't produce the feeling. No feeling, no escape.
2. Plan the break before the session
Decide when you'll stop, before you start: 25 minutes on, 5 off, or one chapter then a break. A break you planned doesn't need to be stolen. You just take it.
3. Make the phone a worse escape
In edgi, open Settings, then Focus, and pick TikTok, Instagram and anything else you escape into, through the iPhone's Screen Time picker. edgi writes each rule as a sentence:
I'll open TikTok no more than 2 times a day, for 10 min each time.
Choose 1 to 30 opens, 1 to 60 minutes, and your study days. Under "A Lesson opens it," choose Every open. Now the escape costs a minute: "One lesson opens TikTok for 10 minutes." Sometimes a minute is all it takes for the urge to pass.
4. Make the break a better break
When you do take the Lesson, it's one idea, a minute long: you guess, tap and test your way through it, then answer a question. You learn something real, then you're back at the desk instead of forty minutes deep in a feed. To make the break about your actual course, make your own. "Quiz me on the causes of World War I." "Make me an explainer on enzyme kinetics." You can make a Lesson, a Quiz of up to 20 questions or an Explainer on any topic you name.
5. Stop late-night you from undoing it
Procrastination gets louder as the deadline gets closer, and so does the bargaining. In edgi, a stricter rule starts the moment you save it, and a looser one waits until midnight. "Just tonight" stops working.
| The procrastination loop | What breaks it |
|---|---|
| The task feels bad | A first step too small to feel bad |
| The phone is the exit | Opens capped per app, a Lesson on every open |
| The exit pays instantly | The exit now costs a minute |
| A break becomes an hour | The app opens for exactly the minutes you set |
| You loosen the rules at 11 p.m. | Looser rules wait until midnight |
Every Lesson you do instead of scrolling is a card. Cards turn foil, then gold, as you come back to an idea, Sets have a finish line, and your Map fills in idea by idea, including the minutes you nearly spent on Reels. A single Lesson keeps your streak alive on the nights the studying wins.
