The best study break app that isn't social media
The best study break app that isn't social media is edgi, and it's free on iPhone. A break on edgi is one 60-second Lesson on something you didn't know you wanted to know: it ends on its own, and the idea becomes a card on a Map of everything you've learned. Then you're back at your desk, and TikTok never got a turn.
We make edgi, and we built it so the five minutes between chapters are the best five minutes of your night.

Where study nights die
Not at the desk. In the break. TikTok and Instagram have no bottom: the next video loads before this one ends, so nothing tells you the break is over. Five minutes becomes forty, and the chapter is cold when you get back.
A good break has an end you can see. An edgi Lesson takes about a minute: you guess, tap and test one idea, answer a question, and it stops. You keep a card for it, so even the break leaves something on the Map.

Spend the break learning how to study
Two edgi Sets are open from your first day, and they were made for the person reading this.
How to Not Forget What You Learn is seven cards: the forgetting curve, the testing effect, spaced repetition, levels of processing, working memory, memory consolidation and cue-dependent forgetting. Its line: "Almost all of what you forget, you forget on the first day." Learn those seven and you'll study differently by Friday.
Why You Procrastinate is seven more, from perfectionism and fear of negative evaluation to analysis paralysis and self-control. Its line: "Procrastination is not laziness. It is emotion regulation gone wrong." That one is for the break you were about to take an hour early.
Start with the forgetting curve. In 1879 Hermann Ebbinghaus started memorizing rows of made-up syllables and testing himself on them for a month afterward. What he found is the reason cramming fails:
60-second Lesson
Forgetting curve
Ebbinghaus forgot five times as much of a list in its first day as in the 30 days after.
The study app you'll actually open
A study app does nothing on a day you don't open it, so edgi makes opening it the easy part. One Lesson keeps your streak, and a home-screen widget keeps the number in sight. Every Lesson earns a card, cards turn foil and then gold as you come back to the idea, and a Set is a finish line seven or eight cards away. By midterms your Map shows what you've covered, idea by idea.
Then there's your actual course. Type what's on the exam ("quiz me on the Krebs cycle", "the causes of World War I") and make a quiz of up to 20 questions, a Lesson that walks you through it, or a longer Explainer you can listen to. The testing effect says pulling an answer out of memory beats reading it again; a quiz on tonight's chapter is that, in your pocket.
Keep TikTok out of the break
If the break is where you lose the night, put TikTok behind a Lesson. In edgi, open Settings, then Focus, and pick the apps you reach for on reflex. For each one you choose how many times a day it opens and for how long, and whether the first open of the day costs a Lesson or every open does. One Lesson can be the whole break. The full study-week setup is on how to block apps while studying.
