ScreenZen vs one sec: which pause app, and what else

By the edgi team

ScreenZen and one sec both put a pause between you and TikTok. ScreenZen is free for every app and adds limits on time and opens; one sec is a breathing exercise before the app opens, free for one app, with Pro at $19.99 a year. If you want the pause to give you something back, edgi does the same job with a 60-second Lesson instead of a wait, free for every app, and each Lesson becomes a card on a Map of what you've learned.

We make edgi, and we built its Focus lock for people who've tried a pause and want the next step.

ScreenZen

ScreenZen is the generous one: free, no subscription, kept going by donations. When you open an app you've added, you get a pause first, and you can cap how much time and how many opens each app gets. If you want a pause on every app and some hard limits without paying, ScreenZen covers more for free.

one sec

one sec is the simplest. Pick an app and every open starts with a short breathing exercise, then you choose whether to go on. It's also the one with research behind it: in a 2023 study in PNAS, 280 people used it for six weeks, gave up on 36% of the opens it paused, and tried to open those apps 37% less overall. It's free for one app; covering more takes Pro, $19.99 a year.

The catch with both

A pause is a question: "do you really want to?" After the hundredth time, you stop reading the question and your thumb learns to wait it out. That's a limit of pausing itself, whichever app does it.

Habit researchers have a better move. Instead of asking you to stop, catch the habit at its first sign and swap in something else:

60-second Lesson

Habit reversal training

Habit reversal never asks you to just stop. It catches a habit's first sign and swaps in a move that makes the habit impossible.

Where edgi fits

edgi's Focus lock catches the same moment both apps catch, and swaps in a 60-second Lesson. You reach for TikTok and get "One lesson opens TikTok for 5 minutes." The Lesson is on something worth knowing, from how GPS needs Einstein to why your brain loves a slot machine: you guess, tap and test your way through it, and it ends with a question. Do it and the idea is a card in your collection, and TikTok opens for exactly the time you chose.

Set it up in edgi under Settings, then Focus: pick the apps with the iPhone's Screen Time picker, set opens, minutes and days for each, and choose whether every open costs a Lesson or just the first one each day. Loosening it waits until midnight.

Behind the lock is a whole app built to make the new habit stick: one Lesson keeps your streak, a widget on your home screen shows it, cards turn foil and then gold as you come back to the idea, Sets have a finish line, there's a feed of short videos from educational creators, and your Map fills in as you go.
