one sec alternatives, for when the pause stops working
The best one sec alternative is edgi. Where one sec puts a breathing pause in front of TikTok, edgi puts a 60-second Lesson there: do it and TikTok opens for the minutes you chose, and the idea you just learned becomes a card on a Map of what you know. It's free on iPhone, for every app you want to lock. ScreenZen is the other free pick if you only want a pause.
We make edgi, and we built its Focus lock for the moment a pause stops being enough.

What one sec gets right
one sec is a good idea, well made. Pick the apps that pull you in, and each time you open one you get a short breathing exercise first, then a choice: keep going or close it. It's free for one app, and Pro is $19.99 a year.
It works, too. In a 2023 study in PNAS, 280 people used one sec for six weeks. They gave up on 36% of the opens it paused, and tried to open those apps 37% less overall.
The catch is habit itself. A pause is a question ("do you really want to?"), and after the hundredth time you stop reading the question. Your thumb learns to wait out the breath.
Swap the pause for a Lesson
edgi's Focus works from the other direction: instead of asking if you're sure, it gives the urge somewhere better to go.
That's straight out of behavioral psychology. Therapists who treat habits don't tell people to stop; they catch the habit at its first sign and swap in a different move.
60-second Lesson
Habit reversal training
Habit reversal never asks you to just stop. It catches a habit's first sign and swaps in a move that makes the habit impossible.
The urge to open TikTok is the first sign. edgi catches it with "One lesson opens TikTok for 5 minutes," and the move it swaps in is a 60-second Lesson: you guess, tap and test your way through something you didn't know you'd find interesting. You don't wait it out. You do something, and you come out of it with a card.

Setting up edgi's lock
- In edgi, open Settings, then Focus.
- Pick the apps through the iPhone's Screen Time picker: TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, X, anything.
- For each, choose how many times a day it opens (1 to 30), for how long (1 to 60 minutes), and on which days.
- Choose whether a Lesson is the price of every open or only the first one each day.
Loosening the rules only kicks in at midnight, so a change made in a weak moment waits until tomorrow.
The part a pause can't give you
Every Lesson you do to get past the lock is yours to keep. It becomes a card, cards turn foil and then gold as you come back to the idea, they fill Sets, and your Map lights up idea by idea. One Lesson a day keeps your streak, and a widget on your home screen shows it. After a month, the urge you used to breathe through has turned into dozens of ideas you can see.

Is one sec free? one sec is free for one app; Pro is $19.99 a year. edgi's Focus is free for every app you lock.
Why does one sec stop working for me? A pause is a question, and people learn to tap through questions. A lock that gives you something to do in the gap, like a 60-second Lesson, pays you back every time, so it keeps working.
Is edgi free? Yes. edgi is free on iPhone, Focus included.
