edgi

Is there an app that makes you learn before opening TikTok?

By the edgi team

Yes: edgi. Turn on Focus in edgi's settings, pick TikTok, and it stays locked until you do a 60-second Lesson; then it opens for the minutes you chose, as many times a day as you chose. It's free on iPhone, and the Lesson you did to get in becomes a card on your Map, so the toll leaves you with something.

We make edgi, and we built it to be the most fun way to earn your way back into TikTok.

App What stands between you and TikTok What you have afterward Price (US)
edgi A 60-second Lesson, once a day or before every open, then a set number of opens of a set length A card for the idea, on your Map Free
ScrollToll One question, "usually an MCAT question, mental math problem, chess tactic, or vocabulary card" Five minutes of the app Plans from $4.49 a week to $69.99 a year
CurioLock A short article, then a question you have to get right The article Pro $4.99 a month
one sec A pause before the app opens Fewer opens (one sec says 57% fewer, on average) Free for one app; Pro $19.99 a year
Opal A schedule or a time limit Less time in the app Free tier; Pro $99.99 a year
iPhone Screen Time A daily time limit, which "can be ignored once reached" by default Less time in the app Built in

What edgi's lock looks like

You set it up once. In edgi, open Settings, then Focus, and pick the apps you want to use less through the iPhone's own Screen Time picker. For each one you choose how many times a day it can open, from 1 to 30, and for how many minutes each time, from 1 to 60. The default is five opens of five minutes. You choose the days, too, and whether only the first open of the day costs a Lesson or every open does.

Then you reach for TikTok on reflex and get this instead:

Open TikTok? One lesson opens TikTok for 5 minutes. 0/5 Opens Today

The button under it says Do a Lesson. Tap it and edgi sends you to a Lesson. A minute later you know why red wine dries your mouth, the card is in your collection, and TikTok unlocks for your five minutes. Thirty seconds before they're up, edgi can warn you it's closing.

Use all your opens and the shield says so: "You set 5 opens a day. That was all of them." You can tap Nevermind, or pay coins for one more, and the price doubles with each extra open, up to a cap.

The detail we're proudest of is the one you'll hate at 11pm. Tightening a limit works right away. Loosening one waits: raise it, or take TikTok off the list, and the change starts tomorrow. The version of you who set the limit gets to keep it for the rest of the day.

Why a Lesson works better than a pause

The pull of TikTok lives in the icon. Your thumb has opened it so many times, and been paid so many times, that seeing it starts the motion before you've decided anything. Psychologists call that stimulus control. In a 2011 study, people who always ate popcorn at the movies ate about as much week-old popcorn as fresh, as long as they were in a cinema. In a meeting room, they ate less of the stale stuff. The place was doing the eating.

60-second Lesson

Stimulus control

A cue controls an action once the action has paid with it. Moviegoers ate week-old popcorn as fast as fresh, but only at the cinema.

A blocker that makes you wait leaves the cue alone and argues with it. You wait out the pause, the icon still pays, and the habit stays the same shape. edgi changes what the cue pays. The way into TikTok now runs through one idea, and the idea is still yours after TikTok closes. Stimulus control's own card on edgi's Map sits next to Operant Conditioning and Reinforcement, which is the rest of that story.

The other apps that stand in the way

A handful of small apps gate your apps behind a quiz. ScrollToll has the most ratings of them, 774 on the App Store: "Every time you reach for Instagram, ScrollToll asks one question first. Get it right and you scroll." The questions are things like MCAT problems, mental math and chess tactics, and plans run from $4.49 a week to $69.99 a year. CurioLock, which launched in March 2026, makes you read a short article and get a question about it right. Its Pro plan is $4.99 a month.

ScrollToll's question checks what you already know or are drilling. CurioLock teaches first, with an article, then asks. edgi's gate is a Lesson inside an app built for learning, so the idea you picked up to get into TikTok lands on your Map with the rest of your cards.

one sec puts a pause in front of the apps you pick. It says that leads to "57% fewer app openings, on average," citing a 2023 study in PNAS, and it's free for one app. It also links up with a vocabulary app, Lengo, so you can learn words to unlock social media.

Opal blocks apps on a schedule or after a time limit. It has a free tier, and Pro is $99.99 a year.

The iPhone's own Screen Time can give TikTok a daily limit. Apple's guide is frank about it: "By default, Screen Time limits can be ignored once reached."

If you'd rather swap the feed than lock it, our page on apps like TikTok but educational covers that, and what to scroll instead of TikTok has scrolls that aren't videos at all.

FAQ

Is there an app that makes you do a lesson before opening TikTok? Yes. edgi's Focus lock keeps TikTok shut until you do a 60-second Lesson, then opens it for the minutes you set. It's free on iPhone.

Can it lock Instagram and YouTube too? Yes. Focus can lock any app you pick in the iPhone's Screen Time picker, up to 20, each with its own opens and minutes.

Does every open cost a Lesson? Only if you want it to. By default the first open of the day costs one Lesson and the rest open with a tap until you've used your opens. You can switch any app to a Lesson before every open.

Is edgi free? Yes. Lessons, cards and the Map are free, and Sets unlock with coins you earn by learning, not money. An optional Pro subscription adds extras like offline access.

Does edgi see which apps I lock? Your picks stay on your phone. edgi gets them from the iPhone's Screen Time as tokens, and nothing about which apps you chose is sent to a server.
