How to block TikTok on iPhone (and make it stick)
To block TikTok on iPhone, use Screen Time's App Limits (Settings, Screen Time, App Limits) or, for a block that holds, a free app like edgi: pick TikTok in edgi's Focus settings, choose how many times a day it can open and for how long, and a 60-second Lesson opens it. Screen Time's limit comes with an Ignore Limit button; edgi's rules can only be loosened at midnight.
We make edgi, and we built Focus to be the TikTok block that still holds at midnight.

Option 1: iPhone Screen Time App Limits
- Open Settings, then Screen Time, and turn it on if it's off.
- Tap App Limits, then Add Limit.
- Find TikTok (search, or open its category), tick it, and tap Next.
- Set the time. The shortest limit is one minute a day.
- Turn on Block at End of Limit. This needs a Screen Time passcode, so set one under Screen Time, then Use Screen Time Passcode.
When the minute runs out, TikTok's icon dims and a time-limit screen covers the app. Without Block at End of Limit, the screen offers One More Minute, Remind Me in 15 Minutes and Ignore Limit for Today. With it, the passcode is needed for most of those, though One More Minute stays. If you set the passcode yourself, you know how to get past it.
Option 2: Downtime
Downtime blocks everything except the apps you allow, on a schedule. In Settings, then Screen Time, then Downtime, set the hours, and keep TikTok off the Always Allowed list. It's good for nights. It's blunt for days, because it blocks your other apps too.
Option 3: delete it and lock the App Store
Delete TikTok, then in Settings, Screen Time, Content & Privacy Restrictions, open iTunes & App Store Purchases and set Installing Apps to Don't Allow, behind a passcode. TikTok can't come back without the code. Neither can any other app you'd like to install on a whim, and you lose the parts of TikTok you liked.
Option 4: edgi's Focus lock, free
If you set the Screen Time passcode yourself, all three options come down to a code you know. edgi takes a different approach: you keep TikTok, decide how much of it you want, and put a price on the door.
- Download edgi and open Settings, then Focus.
- Allow Screen Time access, then pick TikTok in the iPhone's picker. edgi never sees which apps you pick.
- edgi writes your intention as a sentence: "I'll open TikTok no more than 3 times a day, for 5 min each time." Set 1 to 30 opens, 1 to 60 minutes, and the days.
- Under "A Lesson opens it," choose Once a day or Every open.
Now tapping TikTok shows "Open TikTok?" and "One lesson opens TikTok for 5 minutes," with your count, "1/3 Opens Today." Do the Lesson and TikTok opens for exactly five minutes, with a heads-up 30 seconds before it closes. A stricter rule starts the moment you save it. A looser one waits: "A looser limit starts tomorrow."

Why a Lesson at the door
The urge to open TikTok usually isn't about TikTok. It's a cue, boredom or a pause, looking for a payoff. A limit screen gives the cue nothing to do. A Lesson gives it something better than the feed: one idea, a minute long, that you guess at, tap through and test, ending in a question. Like this one, from the Set that explains your phone to you:
60-second Lesson
Doomscrolling
Gloomy headlines win more taps, and the people most worried by bad news watched the most of it.
That card is in The Slot Machine in Your Pocket, nine cards on why your phone feels the way it does, open from your first day in edgi. Every Lesson becomes a card; cards turn foil, then gold, as you return to an idea; and they light up a Map of everything you've learned. One Lesson a day keeps your streak, and TikTok's block screen shows it.
