How to use TikTok less without deleting it
To use TikTok less without deleting it, decide how many times a day you'll open it and for how long, then put a small price on the open so the decision gets made every time. edgi does this for free on iPhone: you set TikTok to, say, three opens of ten minutes, a 60-second Lesson opens it, and loosening the rule waits until midnight. You keep TikTok for the parts you like and lose the forty-minute accidents.
We make edgi, and we built its Focus lock for people who like TikTok and don't like how much of it they watch.

Why deleting TikTok rarely sticks
Deleting the app is a wall you can climb back over from the App Store in under a minute. If it comes back on a bad evening, it comes back with no plan at all. Deleting also throws out the good parts: the recipe a friend sent, the comedian you follow, the one creator who actually explains things well.
The problem was never TikTok existing. It's that TikTok has no ending.
60-second Lesson
Infinite scrolling
An endless feed loads more before you reach the bottom, so nothing tells you to stop.
A book has chapters. An episode ends. TikTok's next video is always already there, so the only stopping point is one you bring with you. That's what the steps below do: they bring the ending.
1. Decide what TikTok is for
Before you set any limit, answer one question: when is TikTok good for you? For most people it's a few short breaks: lunch, the bus, after dinner. It's bad for them in bed, first thing in the morning, and in the middle of anything hard. Write your answer as numbers. Three opens, ten minutes each, is a different plan from one open of thirty minutes, and you'll know which one fits your day.
2. Turn the plan into an intention
In edgi, open Settings, then Focus, and pick TikTok through the iPhone's Screen Time picker. The app writes your plan as a sentence:
I'll open TikTok no more than 3 times a day, for 10 min each time.
You choose 1 to 30 opens and 1 to 60 minutes, and the days it holds, so weekends can be looser than weeknights.
3. Put a price on the open
Under "A Lesson opens it," choose Once a day or Every open. If TikTok is your worst app, pick Every open: each visit costs one 60-second Lesson. If it's mostly fine, pick Once a day.
Now tapping TikTok shows "One lesson opens TikTok for 10 minutes." The Lesson is one idea you guess at, tap through and test in a minute, ending in a question: why chili heat sets off your heat alarm at body temperature, why the coffee plant puts caffeine in its nectar, why every friend's week looks busier than yours on a feed. Then TikTok opens for exactly ten minutes, with a heads-up 30 seconds before it closes. That warning is the ending the feed won't give you.
4. Make loosening slow
Any plan meets a moment when it feels too strict, usually late at night. In edgi, a stricter rule starts the moment you save it, and a looser one waits: "A looser limit starts tomorrow." So you can still change the plan, just not in the mood that wants to break it.
5. Make the other habit worth keeping
You'll reach for TikTok less, and the reach has to go somewhere. When you want to scroll anyway, scroll edgi: a feed of 60-second Lessons and short videos from educational creators. The Slot Machine in Your Pocket, open from day one, is nine cards on why TikTok feels the way it does.
Each Lesson lands as a card, which goes foil and then gold as you return to the idea, on a Map of everything you've learned. One Lesson a day keeps your streak, and the block screen shows it when you reach for TikTok. A month in, you can see what the minutes went to instead.
| Delete TikTok | edgi Focus | |
|---|---|---|
| Keeps the good parts | No | Yes |
| Caps how often you open it | Until you reinstall | 1 to 30 opens a day |
| Price of an open | None | A 60-second Lesson |
| Undoing it tonight | Reinstall in a minute | Looser rules wait until midnight |
| What you keep | Nothing | A card for every Lesson |

FAQ
How do I use TikTok less without deleting it? Set a number of opens and minutes per open, and put a small price on opening it. edgi's free Focus lock does both: it caps TikTok's opens and opens it after a 60-second Lesson.
What is a good TikTok limit? Two or three opens a day of five to ten minutes covers the breaks most people use it for. Keep it off your first and last hour of the day.
Can I limit TikTok only on weekdays? Yes. In edgi's Focus you pick the days each intention holds.
Is edgi free? Yes. edgi is free on iPhone, Focus included.
