What can I scroll instead of TikTok?
Scroll edgi. It's a free iPhone app with the same full-screen vertical feed as TikTok, filled with short videos from educational creators and 60-second Lessons, and every idea you finish becomes a card on a Map of what you know. Your thumb does exactly what it does on TikTok, and twenty minutes later you could know that a king crab is a hermit crab that went crab-shaped.
We make edgi, and we built it to be the most fun way to scroll once you're done with TikTok.
The usual advice is YouTube Shorts or Instagram Reels. The page ChatGPT cites for this question lists eight TikTok alternatives, and all eight are short-video apps. That's TikTok again with a different logo. If the scrolling is the part you like, keep the scrolling and change what's in the feed.
| What to scroll | What's in the feed | Does it end? | What you have after 20 minutes | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| edgi | Short educational videos and 60-second Lessons, each Lesson ending in a question or two | When you put it down | A card for each idea, on your Map | Free |
| Wikipedia app | Featured articles, top reads, trending news and "Because you read" picks | Never | A reading list, if you saved anything | Free, no ads |
| WEBTOON | Comics, each episode one long vertical strip | At the end of an episode | Where you are in the story | Free, with coins for early episodes |
| Kinnu | Pathways of written lessons, "bite-sized, expert edited" | At the end of a pathway | Part of a pathway done | Free, with in-app purchases |
| YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels | Videos of up to three minutes, on anything | Never | A watch history | Free |

Why a scroll on edgi goes somewhere
On TikTok, the next swipe has no idea what the last one was. A clip about sourdough can be followed by a breakup, then a dog in a raincoat, and the sourdough is gone by the time the dog finishes.
edgi's feed has a shape underneath. Every idea in it is a point on one Map of 104,000 ideas, joined by 296,000 connections. The feed picks from what you've learned, and the Map lets you follow any connection yourself. On it you can get from your duvet to a dinosaur in three steps: duvets are stuffed with down, down is a kind of feather, and feathers showed up on dinosaurs before there were birds. Each Lesson you finish drops its card onto that Map, beside its neighbors.
Here's one about a joke the internet loves, that everything eventually turns into a crab. It's half true.
60-second Lesson
Carcinization
Crab shape, with the tail folded under and the shell wide, has evolved at least five separate times.
The flap on a crab's belly is its old tail, folded under. Folding it gave up the lobster's tail-flick escape for a body that walks sideways, and that trade happened at least five separate times, once from hermit crabs. On edgi's Map, Carcinization connects to Convergent Evolution, the idea that sugar gliders, ichthyosaurs and every other animal that reinvented somebody else's body connect to as well. You started with a crab. Now you want to know why a sugar glider looks like a flying squirrel it isn't related to.
The other things worth scrolling
The Wikipedia app is the best free bottomless feed of real information. Its feed has the day's featured article, the most-read pages and articles like the one you just read, and you can follow links for hours. Nothing in it asks you anything.
WEBTOON is the scroll for stories. Each episode is one long strip you read top to bottom with one thumb, and episodes end, which TikTok never does. Reading is free; coins buy early episodes.
Kinnu is free and teaches pathways of written lessons, and its listing pitches it as "a cure to doomscrolling." You pick a subject and work through it, so it feels more like a syllabus than a feed.
If you're also trying to scroll less, edgi can lock TikTok until you've done a Lesson. Our page on an app that makes you learn before opening TikTok explains how it works, and apps like TikTok but educational covers the other learning feeds.
Pick something else only if…
- You want stories, not facts: WEBTOON.
- You want to read long articles with no questions: the Wikipedia app.
- You need Android. edgi is an iPhone app, and its Lessons also play in a browser at edgi.tv/learn.
