Opal vs ScreenZen: a wall, a pause, or a Lesson

By the edgi team

Opal is a wall: it blocks apps on schedules and in sessions, and its strongest mode, Deep Focus, is part of Opal Pro at $99.99 a year. ScreenZen is a pause: a free app that makes you wait and asks if you still want in before an app opens. edgi is a third design, and it's free: a 60-second Lesson opens your apps, on the opens and minutes you set, and every Lesson becomes a card on your Map.

We make edgi, and we built Focus as the third answer to the question these two apps disagree on.

Opal: the wall

Opal is built on Apple's Screen Time around one idea: some hours should have no Instagram in them at all. You set schedules or start a session, and the apps are closed until it ends. Deep Focus, the mode you can't cancel once it's running, is the reason a lot of people choose Opal, and it's part of Pro. The free tier covers basic blocking.

Opal is the pick for people who want certain hours phone-free, full stop.

ScreenZen: the pause

ScreenZen leaves the app open and the choice with you. It makes you wait a few seconds, asks if you still want in, and can cap how many times a day you open the app or how long you stay. Blackout schedules close apps for set hours, and a gesture unlock makes overriding a limit deliberate. All of it is free.

ScreenZen is the pick for people whose problem is the mindless open, not the hours.

The question underneath

The real difference is where each app puts control. Opal puts it in the schedule. ScreenZen leaves it with you and gives you a moment to use it. Psychologists have a name for that dial:

60-second Lesson

Locus of control

Where you put the cause of what happens to you decides whether trying seems worth it.

edgi keeps the choice with you, like ScreenZen, and holds the plan like Opal does. Then it makes the moment at the door worth something.

edgi: the toll

Each app gets an intention, written as a sentence you'd say out loud: "I'll open Instagram no more than 3 times a day, for 5 min each time." You decide the opens, the minutes, the days, and whether a Lesson opens it once a day or every time. Reach for Instagram and the screen says "One lesson opens Instagram for 5 minutes." The Lesson is one idea you guess at, tap through and test in a minute: why a slot machine has decided before the reels move, why a feed makes every friend's week look busier than yours. Then the app opens for the minutes you set, with a notice 30 seconds before it closes.

It holds where holding matters: a stricter rule starts the moment you save it, and a looser one waits until midnight. And every Lesson is a card. Cards turn foil and then gold as you come back to an idea, and your Map fills in, idea by idea, with everything that got between you and your phone.

FAQ

Which is better, Opal or ScreenZen? Opal suits hours with the apps fully closed, with Deep Focus on Pro. ScreenZen suits a free pause before every open. edgi takes the free route with a schedule that holds, and makes each open cost a 60-second Lesson you keep as a card.

Is ScreenZen better than Opal for free? ScreenZen's features are all free; Opal's free tier covers basic blocking and keeps Deep Focus for Pro. edgi's Focus is fully free too.

Can Opal and ScreenZen be bypassed? ScreenZen's basic pause can be dismissed; its blackout schedules can't be during the blackout. Opal's Deep Focus can't be ended early. In edgi, loosening a rule waits until midnight.

Is edgi free? Yes. edgi is free on iPhone, Focus included.
