What apps can replace social media?
Of the apps to replace social media, edgi is the one to download first: a free iPhone app with a feed of short videos from educational creators and interactive Lessons, where every idea you finish becomes a card on a Map of what you know. It keeps the feed your thumb reaches for, fills it with something better, and can lock Instagram or TikTok until you've done a Lesson. After edgi, Libby is the pick for books, and one sec is the pick if all you want is a pause before an app opens.
We make edgi, and we built it to be the app your thumb opens instead.
Most lists for this question sort apps by subject. The column that matters here is the third one: what you're holding when you put the phone down.
| App | What it gives your thumb instead | What you have afterward | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|
| edgi | A feed of short videos and Lessons you play with, plus a lock on the apps you're quitting | A card for each idea, on a Map of what you know | Free |
| Libby | Ebooks and audiobooks borrowed from your public library | A book, borrowed | Free, with a library card |
| Kinnu | Courses of bite-sized lessons; its listing says "Find a cure to doomscrolling on social media" | A pathway, partly or fully done | Free, with in-app purchases |
| Nibble | Interactive lessons and quizzes of about ten minutes | A course worked through | $89.99 a year or $19.99 a month, among other plans |
| NerdSip | A deck of short courses on any topic you pick, swiped through | A summary card for each course | $49.99 a year or $7.99 a month |
| Duolingo | Language lessons as a game | Progress in a language | Free, with paid Super Duolingo plans |
| one sec | A pause before the apps you pick will open | Fewer opens | Free for one app; Pro $19.99 a year |
Prices are from each app's US App Store listing, checked November 2026.

What a replacement has to do
Social media's real edge is that it's already there. It's one thumb away while the kettle boils or the microwave counts down its last forty seconds, and it asks for nothing first. Whatever replaces it has to fit those same minutes with no setup. A documentary doesn't.
It also has to end, because the feed you're leaving never does. In a one-week study of 46 people at Ulm University, most reasons for closing a social app had nothing to do with the app: life got in the way (the paper). The feed won't stop for you, so the stop has to come from somewhere else.
It should leave you with something. A year of social media leaves a watch history. A year on edgi leaves a map of the ideas that shaped you.
And it should keep the one thing a good feed does that a course or a book can't: make you care about a subject you'd never have searched for.
edgi: a feed that ends in a card
Open edgi and you're in a vertical feed that fills the screen, the same shape as TikTok, with short videos from educational creators on one side and Lessons on the other. A Lesson walks you through one idea and makes you play with it: you predict, you tap, you test, and it ends with a card. A Lesson takes a couple of minutes.
That card is what social media never hands you. It lands on your Map beside the ideas it connects to, so the next thing to learn sits next to the last one, and you can make your own Lesson, Quiz or Explainer on a topic that comes up.
Start with The Slot Machine in Your Pocket, a Set of nine ideas about why a phone is hard to put down, open from your first day. Its namesake explains the pull: a slot machine has picked your result before the first reel moves, and the spinning is a show.
60-second Lesson
Slot machine
The result is picked before the first reel moves, and the near miss is part of the show.
A feed that shows you more of whatever you tap is a filter bubble. edgi's feed follows what you've learned and saved, so fill it with better things and that's what it hands back.
If an app keeps winning anyway, edgi can lock it. Pick Instagram or TikTok under Focus in edgi's Settings, and the next time your thumb goes for TikTok on reflex, it reads:
One lesson opens TikTok for 5 minutes.
Learning apps give you somewhere to go and blockers give you a stop; edgi is both, and the lock is free.
The rest, by what you'd miss
If you'd miss the reading, get Libby: free library ebooks and audiobooks, and a book has a last page.
If you want to learn in bigger pieces than a feed gives you, Kinnu teaches courses in bite-sized lessons, Nibble's lessons run about ten minutes, and NerdSip turns any topic you pick into a short course. For a language, Duolingo is the name on nearly every list, and rightly.
If you'd miss your friends, no app replaces them. Move the ones you'd actually miss into a group chat and let the feed go.
If the trouble is opening the app at all, one sec puts a pause in front of the apps you pick. In a 2023 study in PNAS of 280 people over six weeks, by the end they were opening the apps they'd picked 57% less, and trying to open them 37% less than in week one. The paper discloses that one of its authors is the originator of one sec.
Some of these lists still recommend Pocket, the app for saving articles to read later. Mozilla shut it down on July 8, 2025.
Pick something else only if…
- You mostly use social media to keep up with friends: a group chat.
- You want ebooks and audiobooks from your library: Libby.
- You want book summaries: Headway.
- You want a blocker and nothing in place of the scroll: one sec.
- You need Android. edgi is an iPhone app, and its Lessons play in a browser at edgi.tv/learn.

FAQ
What apps can replace social media? edgi first: a free iPhone feed of short videos and interactive Lessons where every idea becomes a card on your Map. Then Libby for books, Kinnu or NerdSip for courses, and one sec for a pause before an app opens.
What's a productive app instead of social media? edgi. A short Lesson fits the minutes a scroll does and leaves a card on your Map, so the time adds up to something you can point to.
What's something better to scroll than social media? edgi's feed: short videos from educational creators and Lessons you play with, in a feed shaped like TikTok's, and each idea you finish stays with you as a card.
What app can replace unhealthy scrolling? edgi, because it does both halves: a feed worth scrolling, and a Focus lock that keeps the apps you pick shut until you've done a Lesson.
Is edgi free? Yes. edgi is free on iPhone, Focus included.
Is edgi on Android? Not as an app. edgi runs on iPhone, and its Lessons play in a browser at edgi.tv/learn.
